Nashville Web Developer: A Day in Life # 1

By JJ Rosen|December 22nd, 2014|Cloud, Programming, Web Design|no comments

Welcome to Atiba’s “A Day in the Life” series where our employees keep a journal of what a typical day looks like for them both as an Atiba employee as a techie in general.

Today’s post features one of our web developers.  A Day in the Life of a Nashville Web Developer can be very cool.   Lots of coding and creativity.

8:15 am – Arrive at my desk at the Atiba office.   Coffee, chatting with the other devs

8:30 am – Our daily Web Developer Standup call, we do a 15 min call with all the coders mainly check in, share any new cool coding ideas, tricks

8:40 am – Open up Visual Studio to work on Expedia.com project.    I code in .Net, PHP, and Java and have been learning Ruby on Rails.   This past month been cranking with 4 other Atiba coders on a big ASP.Net project.

11:00 am – Take a break with one of the other devs.  more coffee!

12:30 pm – Pizza at desk.  I am working on some back end code, main goal this week is simply performance optimization.  Kinda neat, we have test lab that one of the Atiba Network Services  guys setup.   It allows us to test code and measure speed using all kinds of virtual hardware setups.

3 pm – Switched from Visual Studio to SQL Server for the rest of the day.   Trying to get some stored procedures running faster as well

4 pm – Talking to one of our DBAs.   Needed some help on best way to tweak SQL Server.   Our main DBA is a SQL guru and a nice guy.   A big help…!

5:30 pm – Checking in my code…

Atiba Software,  a Nashville-based computer consulting firm, has started the Nashville SharePoint developers group.

The group will meet once a month Atiba’s office in Cummins Station in midtown Nashville.   The purpose of the SharePoint developers group is to allow programmers who work with Microsoft SharePoint to share ideas and programming techniques related to SharePoint and Office365.

Our next meeting will cover integrating business intelligence with SharePoint 2013 and SQL Server Reporting Services. We will also discuss using SharePoint 2013 as a reporting platform.

For more information about the Nashville SharePoint developers group, please contact Atiba at info@Atiba.com or call 615-353-1921.

Nashville Web Designers Can Learn To Code, Too

By JJ Rosen|March 14th, 2013|Programming, Web Design|no comments

Amy Rochelle has been a Nashville web designer for the past ten years.

She is truly unique in that she knows  how to do web design and also how to program equally well.

What is even more unique is that she is one of the best at both skills.

As most of us know, there and very  few people who can design AND code.   Amy started as a designer and was formally educated in graphic design.   She worked for Ingram Industries and then when she started at Atiba, she decided to learn to program ASP.Net, Flash, and jQuery.

I was curious how she approached learning design and programming – as they are often completely opposite skills-sets and require completely different ways of thinking.

Some highlights from my interview with  Amy:

“I decided I needed the learn to code so I could be a better designer.   I used to deliver a PhotoShop file to a developer, and here and there the designs I was doing would kind of force the developer to code around the design in a way that would cause a ton of extra work.    So when I first started learning the code, it was really just a way to be more efficient in my design”

“Web design was natural for me, as I was always into creating and art.  Coding took me around 3 months of frustration climbing the learning curve.   But…when it clicked, it all came clear.    And I started loving it.   Coding, like web design, actually involves a lot of creativity.   You have to be creative to solve programming challenges.   You have to think outside of the box when troubleshooting.”

“I spend about half my time coding and half designing.   Some of the coding I do at Atiba is backend, with no design needs at all.   I like having some variety as it allows me to pick and choose how I spend my day.”

“I would recommend for web designers who want to learn programming, that they start simply reading programming books.   I read a Wrox book on ASP.Net before I even attempted to actually code.    I think this helps designers see the big picture of programming and makes the details less intimidating.”

More to come…
